No Outsiders

Harlow Green is a school which has an ethos based on holistic development of children with an understanding that each individual will become a member of a community in which we want them to be positive and understanding of the diversity they will be immersed in, just as they are in our school.

To support our work in this aspect, we have chosen to be a No Outsiders school and use the resources of this programme.

What is No Outsiders?

The vision is of Inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens.

By providing the resources for schools and their communities their mission is to:

  • Build confident educators
  • Engage with Parents and Carers
  • Empower Children
  • Develop community Cohesion

It is the statutory duty of schools to teach British Values of ‘Acceptance, Understanding & Respect of Others’ which includes the protected characteristics, supported by The Equality Act 2010.  However, in a primary school, this must be done carefully and sensitively in order to be appropriate to the age and development of children.

How does No Outsiders work?

The No Outsiders approach is to provide opportunities for children to consider the lives of other people and how they can be impacted within our communities.  This is achieved through two activities: Assemblies and children’s stories.

Assemblies (fortnightly)

The Head teacher will deliver an assembly, adapted from those provided by the programme, which will look at a specific person who will have a protected characteristic (e.g. disability, race, gender).

Examples of this would be:

  • a child with a disability not being able to access the school lunch counter because of their height
  • a girl complaining to Sainsburys because girls’ school trousers don’t have pockets
  • a Muslim takeaway owner providing free Fish & Chips on Christmas day for any customer

Within the assembly, information will be shared about the person and their context which children can discuss and make comment on.  The focus is on children considering the situation and having an opinion which may differ from the opinions of others.

Please see the introductory assembly and some examples assemblies below:

Children’s stories (half termly)

Within class, the teacher will share a picture book with the class which will allow for discussion about a particular aspect of a character within the story and how this impacts their lives.

The aim is to constantly see that difference is all around us and can sometimes lead to complications unless there is understanding and acceptance.
